A day out on Dow's Lake

A day out on Dow's Lake

Summer and winter alike, Dow's Lake Pavilion is packed full of activities for the whole family to enjoy.

A haven of peace and quiet
Dow's Lake Pavilion in the heart of Ottawa makes for a perfect stop-off point along the historic Rideau Canal. A stone's throw away from the hustle and bustle of the city, in summer the Pavilion provides a welcome break in a green setting that's a firm favourite with locals. Set along the shores of the peaceful lake, stroll through the wilderness or enjoy one of the many water sports and activities on offer here, all of which are suitable for beginners and more seasoned athletes alike.
How about a go on the canoes or kayaks?
Start the day with a burst of energy and hire a kayak or canoe to get to know the lake better. Pedalos are also available to hire (probably a safer bet for younger visitors). If you're lucky enough to be in Ottawa in May, it would be a crime to miss the tulip festival. Dow's Lake is transformed into the festival's official exhibition hub, and the Commissioners Park's flowerbeds suddenly explode into a colourful tapestry of 300,000 tulips!
Picking a restaurant
Whatever the season, stop off for lunch at one of the three restaurants here. The Lago Bar Grill serves up classic and contemporary Canadian cuisine. The menu changes by the season, and the waterfront views lend the eatery an extra little helping of charm. At Malone's Lakeside Grill, prepare to be treated to the authentic North American experience. The dishes on offer here are varied indeed, and the sweeping bay windows let you sit back and admire the views. For something a little more exotic and easier on the wallet, tuck into some mouth-watering quesadillas (tortillas with melted cheese) at Mexicali Rosa's.
The world's biggest ice rink
In winter, don't be surprised to find the Rideau Canal's peaceful waters transformed into the world's largest ice rink. The UNESCO World Heritage-listed circuit of this natural ice rink leads up to Dow's Lake. The Pavilion offers a wide selection of skates and sleds to let you glide across the lake in absolute safety. The Pavilion also offers sheltered resting areas where skaters can kick back and watch the world go by while sipping at a hot drink.
Winter can only mean one thing: The Snowflake Ball!
Travelling to Ottawa in February? You're in luck, as you'll be able to wander around town admiring ice sculptures and other weird and wonderful frozen features. For three whole weeks, the city comes together to celebrate winter with the Snowflake Ball festival. Dow's Lake Pavilion is the place to be if you're looking to experience all the entertainment on offer. Find out more about this enchanting location today!
