As UK’s second largest city, there are plenty of things to do in Birmingham with kids. Whether you’re looking for something educational, historical or just some good old-fashioned fun, you’re sure to find something in Brum!
Thinktank at Birmingham Science Museum
If your kids are into science, then they’re sure to love a visit to Birmingham Science Museum. The award-winning museum is a fun and interactive way to learn about how the world works. You can study the city’s industrial past with working models of steam engines, learn all about the human body, how we can help the present world, and travel to the future with space exploration and medical breakthroughs. There is also a new Marine Worlds gallery featuring the skeleton of a 200 million year old giant sea monster, and a Spitfire exhibition which focuses on the mighty war machines.
National Sea Life Museum
Discover all about life under the sea at the National Sea Life Museum, located right in the heart of Birmingham. One of the city’s star attractions, you can see all kinds of sea life, including rays, jellyfish, octopus, eels, clownfish and even otters! Kids also have the option to feed penguins, sharks and turtles. The aquarium is a pioneer in several conservation programmes, such as seahorse breeding, marine animal rescue and rehoming for the endangered loggerhead turtle.
Birmingham Botanical Gardens
For a family activity that doesn’t break the bank, take the kids to the beautiful Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Glasshouse. Wander around the 15 acres of green gardens, or hire a Garden’s Explorer family backpack, filled with activities and resources in one of the four themes – Brilliant Birds, Tremendous Trees, Bugs and Beasties or Amazing Plants. You can also take a trail which explains all about the native flora and fauna found in the Gardens and Glasshouse so you can your trip both educational and informative.
The Birmingham Mystery Treasure Trail
The Birmingham Mystery Treasure Trail is a unique way for the family to explore the city and its surrounds. It’s an imaginative self-guided route where you need to work as a team to crack codes and clues hidden in some of Birmingham’s most famous sights. There are nine trails in the West Midlands area, including three set in the city centre. The routes are normally about two miles long and can be done in a couple of hours. The clues vary in difficulty, but if you all work together, you should be able to find them hidden in buildings, permanent features and monuments. You can buy maps via the website and then download them directly from the site, or have them sent to you in the mail.
You can’t come to Brum without spending a day at the famous Cadbury World. It’s just a short 20-minute ride from the city centre and one of our favourite things to do with kids near Birmingham. At Cadbury World, take the self-guided tour to learn about the history of cacao, the story and origins of the famous Cadbury brand and watch chocolate being made right in front of your eyes. For little children, there is also an exciting 4D chocolate experience with your favourite Cadbury mascots, and an African adventure playground. Meanwhile, parents can relax with a delicious treat in the Cadbury café.
