The Play Arena
All parents know that play centres can be a godsend in wet weather, and the Play Arena offers much more than just soft play. There’s enough to keep under 10s happy for hours in this huge centre, including all the usual slides, climbing frames and crawl tubes in the main play frame. Plus there’s lots of extra fun attractions like a go kart track, roller slide, air-cannon shooting range, sports arena and 5D cinema. Very little ones are also well catered for with their own toddler area with octopus and boat rides, plus the award-winning ‘Comfyland’, a sensory area for ages one to five. And when the sun does make an appearance, there’s an outdoor play area too.
Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre
This attraction comes top of many lists of things to do with kids in Sheffield, and it’s easy to see why. The exotic animal encounters include the Butterfly House, where butterflies and tropical birds fly freely around your head. There is also the Meerkat Mansion, the Lemur Heights walk through area, Farm Barn and many more. Little dino fans will love walking the Dinosaur Trail, and there’s a Camelot play area and a Splash and Play Zone to enjoy between the animal attractions. The Wilderness Walkthrough, Wildlife Pond and Nature Trail are nice spots to encourage the kids to appreciate nature too.
Awesome Wall Climbing Centre
Active families should head for this amazing indoor climbing centre to burn off energy on rainy days. There are climbing walls to suit all ages and abilities, including a Children’s Space Zone for younger climbers complete with tunnels, slides and lots of places to hide! The Petzl double overlap wall and the Bouldering wall will test the skills of novice and experienced climbers alike. Taster sessions are a good option for beginners, and are available to groups of two or more.
Graves Park
There are lots of lovely parks, gardens and green spaces in Sheffield. Out on top is Graves Park, just three miles from the city centre, it’s hard to beat for families. The on-site animal farm is free to enter and there are two playgrounds for kids to slide, swing and climb in. A nature trail, woodland area and lakes offer plenty of beautiful scenery to stroll through, and the café is handy for refuelling with a drink and a bite to eat afterwards. Little ones will also love the land train that runs on the weekends and during school holidays. Alternatively, Sheffield has many more parks to choose from. Endcliffe Park is a relaxing spot for nature lovers, complete with woods and waterfalls. The Sheffield Botanical Gardens are bursting with colourful flowers all year round. Last but not least, the Rother Valley Country Park is popular with families for its playground, mini train and watersports on the lake.
National Emergency Services Museum
Many kids have a fascination with emergency services vehicles and you’ll find plenty of them at this fantastic museum. Set in the old police, fire and ambulance station in Sheffield, it’s the largest emergency services museum in the world. As well as over 50 vehicles showing the progression of emergency transport from horse power, to steam, to motor vehicles, there are numerous other exciting exhibits. These include replica Victorian police cells, a Blitz exhibition and a fireman’s bedroom. It’s a history lesson for all ages that’s anything but boring! Good value family tickets are available and emergency services staff visit for free.
